Shaolin is at the base of all the other Kung Fu styles (and more or less directly of many other martial arts, like Karate); it has been developed thousands of years ago in China, in a Chan Buddhist monastery: the Shaolin Temple. The ancient monks who lived there were formidable elite warriors, trained each day mind and body in combat (with bare hands or with martial weapons) but they were devoted to non-violence and meditation.
