Lesson 1 – My first Kung Fu training
What you need to start training
To start training in 6 Dragons Kung Fu you simply need 3 things:
- Sportswear (read What you need to train)
- Space and time where no one will bother you (read Training area and external people)
- Determination (read Having discipline: do not contradict ourselves)
Note – This article has been asked by one of our Core Course practitioners on Patreon (see how to attend our home study classes here Learn Kung Fu online: a beginner-to-expert course).
A training partner in this first section is not fundamental (read 5 effective ways to find a training partner).
Starting equipment
Gradually we will add more and more training equipment (read The basic equipment for training in 6DKF) but for the first day of practice you can start simply with:
- A comfortable T-Shirt
- Long socks (to wear over the trousers up to the knees) to avoid treading the hem
- Open-fingered gloves (without exaggerated padding)
- Sportive shoes with a low sole
- Comfortable trousers that do not limit in any way the opening of your legs (this is not secondary)
- …
A note by Master Kongling – You cannot imagine the difference that can make the last tip: I have seen “instructors” lose their split due to the wrong trousers. To deepen this topic read Martial arts: how to choose the right clothing.
For now, do not buy anything, use what you already have.
A dress is a dress, we also have an official uniform but it is only a symbol for official events (graduations, exhibitions, etc.), Kung Fu is not in a place, in a weapon or in a dress, it is in your heart and in your mind.
A note by Master Kongling – The only valid reasons to wear a uniform are: to demonstrate respect for the instructor or the practice, to enter in a training mood and / or to help your motivation (read Motivation: from passion to self-discipline).
A place to train
You need one or more places to train (“guan”) and these places must respond to the following needs (read How to train without risks):
- Completely safe (no obstacles, no sharp things, no dangerous floors, no fragile objects, etc.)
- Away and free from distractions and external disturbances (entertainment, smartphones, unwanted people, etc.)
- Accessible every day without any issue (at any meteorological conditions, at the right time, etc.)
- Not necessarily big but, for now, not too small (for the first individual training you need at least a 4x4m completely empty / free room)
- …
A note by Master Kongling – When a practitioner has developed the right spatial intelligence (read The most important skill in combat) can train even with a 9-section chain whip (read The Shaolin 9 Section Chain Whip) in a small room and with a lot of unstable obstacles but for now, this is uselessly dangerous.
A time to train
From the beginning, you have to find a space (preferably fixed during the day) to train 6 times a week (no excuses). It is not important that it is 15 minutes or 4 hours (read Tips on how to stretch our training times), the important thing, for now, is that it has to be a constant (read How to train with perseverance):
- Whatever mood you may have…
- Whatever level of stress you may reach…
- Whatever tiredness you may feel…
- Whatever external commitment you may have…
- Whatever happens…
- …
There will always be something to distract you, something more useful, more interesting, more important, more inevitable: it does not matter.
This is your first step towards building solid self-discipline (read Discipline is the key to freedom):
- You must stop being a victim of events and even less of external influences
- Excellence lies in staying focused on the chosen objective
- …
In the beginning, it will be difficult but gradually you will be able to include training as an integral part of your lifestyle (read Practical examples of daily training time subdivision).
A note by Master Kongling – A small trick: put an “x” on the calendar only after the end of each training session, this way you will give material concreteness to your pledge.
The real (formative) goal is to understand that time is precious and should never be wasted.

What is the right training time for a beginner?

It depends on you and your athletic conditions, you can start from 5 to 60 minutes each day. Increase gradually, do not be subdued by the effort. You have time for that.

Hi, how much do you plan to train in a day?
Master Kongling
December 20, 2017 @ 7:57 am
It depends on your preparation level:
– It can be also 5-15 minutes to start (if you are totally inactive)
– If you are in a normal condition you can do 20-30 minutes
– If you are in a good physical condition you can also start with 45-60 minutes
The idea is not to exaggerate, it is useless to force yourself doing an effort that will make impossible for you to train the next few days. The best results come with a gradual progression.

How can I organize my training? I work a lt during the day

Hi, it all depends on your times, your energies and your discipline.
Personally, I train (on average) 1-2 hour in the morning (before lunch) and 4-5 hours after 6-7 p.m.
This is not tiring for me because I’m used to it (I need it). At the end of each workout you must have conserved enough energy to fight one last time: this is the secret.
It is all about graduality:

Later we will publish an article with practical examples of training times organization in conjunction with working and / or school schedules.
