Ground fighting: advanced techniques
After seeing how to prevail in the ground fighting, we want to go deep with some more advanced tips about the combat tactics (“advanced” because they require some skill, concentration and experience that a novice normally does not have).
Here are some ideas / points of view (almost always valid) that can put us in the condition to prevail:
- If we are in a stall condition to our advantage (eg. we are applying a lever) we do not have to focus on maintain it at all costs, we have to use this time to think quickly to the subsequent moves (what can the opponent do to break free? How would we react? How can we increase our advantage?)
- As we fight (at an advantage or disadvantage), we try to limit, if not completely remove the visual to our opponent (only a real expert is able to perceive himself and the opponent without the use of sight)
- If we are in close contact, it is difficult to deliver effective blows, in many cases, however, we can reach many of the vital / pain points and activate them without excessive need precision / power (later we will see what and how)
- We have to begin opposing motions to those that we really want to take and let us use them as an elastic momentum to achieve our real aims (to make credible this kind of “feints” we must learn to move the body with balance and power even in conditions of large imbalance)
- Even if it means losing part of the vision, we have to be as much as possible in close contact with the opponent, our body has to wrap, crush and control, in this way we will restrict his movements and the risk of being struck (by fists, kicks, knees, heads, etc.).
- We have to block the opponent oxygen flow through compressions and closings of the respiratory tract (nose, mouth, neck, chest, etc.), this way we are certain that his priority will be to restore his breathing (any other action will be interrupted at least partially)
- We always have to use powerful tools on weaker tools, we avoid the direct force against force confrontation (eg. the power of the legs, abdominal muscles to prevail on body weight and to exit from the closures, arms against fingers, etc.)
- As we move we have to avoid any hesitation, we need to use our weight to lobby aggressively the opponent in the most vulnerable points (eyes, genitals, neck, etc.), and the connections of the joints
- If the opponent is an expert, he will not make us able to come immediately to his vulnerable points because that’s where he will wait for us, we have to begin to lock / damage his fighting tools hands, fingers, wrists, elbows and knees
If the situation forces us to face a fight to the ground (in a self-defense context and at risk of life) we must be like snakes, explosives, fast, accurate, constrictive and lethal; the opponent must never understand what we are doing, he has to be blinded by grief, our movements and our closures.
We must economize the use of strength, we need to find good dominant positions, we must follow the flow of the battle up to dominate its development.
In the next articles we will see other tactics and in the future will go down even more into the details of specific situations.
