Grappling: facing the ground fighting
In the previous article we saw, in practice, what is wrong to do during a confrontation on the ground, let’s see some tips on how mentally focus ourself for a ground fight.
The mental attitude:
- In a ground fight we have (relatively) more time to process strategies, we have to use the inner calm to reflect in a serene way, detached and therefore effective on moves to do, let’s imagine being alone; the relaxation is fundamental, it helps right decisions, power and flexibility
- The fight to the ground is like a chess game, it is right to think so consistent but it is better to think well in fast times, we do not have to abuse the time because if it is at our disposal is also at the service of the opponent (if for example we are resisting to a lever, we are wasting energy and accumulating potentially crippling damages)
- Let’s imagine through spatial intelligence to see the fight from outside, from above, we have to imagine ourselves to move 2 rag dolls and giving us advice on how to prevail on the opponent. In this we can find help and inspiration from the idea of the demon that ninjas were driven to create in their mind to judge / guide their actions (which we have already mentioned) *
- If the seriousness of the situation requires it (eg. real risk of life), let’s get moving and operate on the opponent body as if it were inanimate, let’s avoid all those instinctive measures that limit our dangerousness (every opportunity to attack and create a serious damage is good, also the most lazy, all that things that are prohibited in a gym)
- We have to ignore pain, every lever, every shot will do us harm and we will have little or no opportunity to dodge attacks, let us not be distracted by damage, although it is difficult, we must remain focused on the ultimate goal, survival
- We must use all our senses in combination, spatial intelligence and tact at the first place, the view can be obscured at any time, this should not make us hesitate or let go even for a split second, we have to start fighting with the idea that probably we will not be able to see
In the next article we will see what, practically and physically is good to do in a real fight to the ground.
* Obviously this is not a mechanism that can be achieved automatically, we need a specific training (more about this later).
