Grappling: 8 tips to prepare for the ground fighting
We saw some methodologies on how to avoid being caught, how do not end to the ground and how to finish on the ground in a beneficial way, now we start to see how to deal with a real fight to the ground.
Fighting on the ground is almost always a bad idea, however, we have seen that there are situations in which it is inevitable and situations where it is even beneficial; so here are some ideas on how to prepare physically and mentally for the fight to the ground:
- Let’s train the flexibility of each part / joint of our body, the more flexible we are, the more we will be able to liberate us and do not be victim of the levers and others’ constraints
- Let’s train to move on the ground with the idea of wanting to achieve the same agility and freedom of interaction that we own by standing (belly down, up, sideways, on our knees, to 4 feet, etc.), We must become like serpents
- Through specific exercises, we must learn how to use breathing properly, to free us, to block the other, to gain power in confined spaces, to preserve energy, to better flex our body, etc. (we will see this in the next articles)
- We have to increase our resistance and our breath away (with running and all those exercises that involve effort on the duration) otherwise our combat performance will last a few seconds
- Let’s train to play with big weights on the ground (eg. from a 25 to a 75Kg grappling dummy, the ideal is 45Kg) and especially not spare ourselves to face against more strong opponents of us (perhaps from positions of disadvantage) until the end of his strength
- Let’s do not underestimate the technical aspect, our and the one of every potential opponent, we have to study our style and deepen the others (techniques, counter-techniques, etc.), this will help us as well as to apply also to predict / prevent others’ moves
- Building each muscle involved is the last (optional) step but if all our professional closure on opponents resolves suffering the power of others we have to do something, we have to find our weaknesses and train individual body parts so they can then work together (strength training)
In the next article we will review what is wrong to do in a fight to the ground.

If you never have done ground fighting it is very difficult to avoid his attempts to transfer the combat in his field. Ground fighting should be studied both to be faced but also to be avoided. In the meaning time you can read this (but it is not enough):
