Grappling: 6 things to avoid in a ground fight
After seeing how to prepare our body and our mind, let’s go deep in a real fight; first, we start to list what it is (usually) wrong to do:
- If we are going down to the ground we must avoid to beat in the wrong way, we must break the fall and distribute fluidly the weight by limiting the damage of the impact (about the falls we will discuss in more detail below)
- When someone is partially above us, we must not stand with our back or abdomen flat on the floor, let’s try to stay on the sides in order to have more mobility, this way we can rest our legs so solid and not be subjected to the 100% of the opponent’s weight
- When our opponent is in an elevated position in respect to us (more or less in contact), we never have to finish with one or more arms under the weight of our body, our chances of interaction are reduced drastically and defeat is near
- Let’s avoid as much as possible to use muscle strength and stiffness, they will consume a lot of energy and we will express inevitably little potential (in proportion to what the softness and relax provides in the same mental and physical condition)
- Let’s never stand still for more than 1-1.5 seconds, our opponent must not have time to develop, implement, stabilize or improve his tactics of struggle; this is important even if we are in a disadvantage or advantage (where reasonable, it’s always necessary to increase our supremacy)
- If we are losing an advantage we do not have to waste time trying to maintain it, we instantly have to design a new and more effective counter-apply it and disregard the intention opponent
- We have to avoid allowing the opponent to take a stable / balanced position, both in times of transition, either at specific times of application or release from a technique
- We never have to give our opponent the opportunity to get our head, wrap our neck but also to cover our vision, and, in general, to be able to apply the most common levers to our weaker joints
The things to avoid are myriads, we have chosen some among the most frequent and useful for newcomers to the world of ground fighting (later we will enter further specifically). In the next article of this series we will see what is right to do.
