Aguilar: the assassin “Shaolin monk” renegade from the Temple
The fact
In June 2013, in Bilbao (Spain), the Shaolin “master” Juan Carlos Aguilar was arrested by the Basque Police. The accusation was that he had brutally killed two women within a week:
- Maureen Adisca Otuya (Nigerian, 29 years old, prostitute)
- Jenny Sofía Rebollo Tuirán (Colombian, 40 years old, hairdresser)
Aguilar confessed that on May 25, 2013, he had killed Rebollo, and on June 2, Otuya, through “ritual murders”. The reality is that the man had brutally beaten, tortured and gagged them inside his gym-temple, Zen 4 (very famous in those years).

Who was Aguilar
Accordingly to what was reported, Aguilar:
- Has been eight times national champion and three-time world champion (the involved federations deny it)
- Was among the first Western Shaolin monks recognized by the Temple (Shaolin Temple deny it)
- Since 1997 was the highest rank in Europe (Shaolin Temple deny it)
- …
Also known by the Chinese name of “Huang C. Aguilar”, he was used to call his gym a Chan temple of Buddhist philosophy, a “Monasterio Oceano de Tranquillidad” (“monastery ocean of tranquility”).
Unfortunately, this idea of peace was only a facade.
In fact, in the searches following the arrest, human vertebrae and bones were found both in the gym, both in his house (hidden in plastic bags and envelopes).
After being arrested, it was Aguilar himself who confessed that he “believed” to have dismembered a woman and thrown her remains into the river that crosses Bilbao.
His school was organized like a real sect: finalized at his adoration.
Even before the fact, martial practices were (separately) annexed to acts of sexual nature (apparently tending to sadism and sadomasochism).
A note by Master Kongling – Was he a real martial arts expert? I have never seen him fighting but certainly, he was not an improvised or a beginner.
Why talk about this story
A note by Master Kongling – To tell the truth, Aguilar had already been under treatment for two years for a brain tumor (an arachnoid cyst in the left temporal, congenital in nature). Had this perhaps partially compromised his ability to understand and want? It is possible but probably it is not a sufficient justification (to do what he did he needed a lot of clarity). In any case, this is not the point we want to dwell on, not the horrible news story and not even the fact that the Shaolin Temple quickly pretended not to know Aguilar (despite many photos, videos and books which at least testify to a close bond).
Talking about this topic is painful for me and for all the Kung Fu practitioners but it is important to do so because this story highlights an absolutely fundamental aspect of our martial preparation:
- The active participation
- The work on ourselves
Without these 2 elements, there is no Kung Fu.
What truly is Kung Fu?
It is not the simple fact of studying its methods that make us true practitioners of Kung Fu: in this way, it would be worth studying any other fighting system: it would be the same (Krav Maga, etc.).
What makes the real difference is the way we get involved:
- In dealing with our demons, our fears, our pettiness, etc.
- In an effort to channel the negative in positive
This makes the difference between any violent (or frustrated) person looking for ways to impose himself and a true practitioner.
This is Kung Fu: actively work on ourselves and not just being empty bags to be filled with notions.
